Associations

Looking at just about any bit of data on this site, you are going to see something called "Associations". Simply put, associations are how we group together all the different data we collect.

For example, you load up a waypoint showing us where to park for a certain trail. Under its associations you should see the trail it is a parking spot for. You might also see a couple photos of the parking spot associated with it as well. Heck, maybe this is the starting spot for a GPS track someone uploaded - and they associated the track with this waypoint.

This   icon is how we represent "associations" - clicking on it will bring you to a data listing showing everything associated with the subject record.

Tags

If you are a blogger, you are probably familiar with tags. If not, here's the scoop: A tag is a label. A label is a descriptive term used to describe or classify something. Ok, easy enough, but how does this apply here? In the online world, tags are just that, one or two word terms or phrases that we use to describe something. Separated by commas.

I like examples. Say you are writing a trail review, and this particular trail is known for its scenery, lots of climbing and rocky terrain. Then logical tags you would want to type in would be something like this: "Scenic, Climbing, Rocky".

Here on Crankfire we use this "tagging" system on trail reports, trail reviews, events and gps tracks.

GeoTagging (Locating)

You see this little fella  ? It means we know where something is located.

On most records, when something is not located, we try to make it obvious that we want it located! You can go about this two different ways:

  1. Clicking on one of these "locate me" links will bring you to our geotagging page where you will be presented with a map along with our search dialog and layer control. Use these tools to find the area your subject object is located and double click on the map. This will place a red marker on the map, please note, you can also drag and drop this marker around the map. Notice that an infowindow should have opened with a latitude and longitude link along the top. Clicking this link should update the form at the top of the page. From here all you have to do is choose the relative accuracy of this plot and save it.

  2. Locating via Association: For example, you upload a photo of, for example, a waypoint object in our databases. By simply associating the photo to the waypoint we will automatically update the photos location with the associated waypoints coordinates. Easy huh? In the instance you associate this record to multiple geotagged objects, we will choose the coordinates of the most accurate association. Fun huh?

Maps Overview

Yeah, we got maps. I suggest you head into the map and click the "Help" link up top.

Waypoints

These are places of interest that are, well, interesting, or significant enough to have their own record. We break them out into several categories: Parking Areas, Scenic Spots, Points of Interest, Natural Stunts, Stunts and Other.

You might also notice that some parking waypoints have an address associated with them. We provide these for those of us with driving GPS units. However, we generate these addresses automatically via "reverse geocode", so please verify the provided addresses are accurate!

Icons Legend

Icons are freaking everywhere! What do they all mean?

Yeah, we like icons. They provide a quick clean way to identify things and to get users to where they want to be. Unfortunately, there might be a bit of a learning curve here. Fortunately though, if you mouse over most any of them, a little tooltip should popup explaining what they do.

City/State/Zipcode Picker

We really like to know where things are, and if we can't have 100% accuracy, we would like to at least know what zipcode things are in.

We want to make this as easy as possible, so you can do three things here:

  1. Choose a state and start typing the city name. We will autosuggest the City/Zipcode as you type.
  2. If you know the zipcode, simply type it in the zipcode field, we will fill in the rest.
  3. Click on the   icon to get a dialog where you can choose your city from a full listing by state.
